In Déjà Vu? Susan Bright reflects on the identity of photography and its evolution over the course of history
The British writer and curator Susan Bright has designed Déjà vu?, a programme composed of five individual exhibitions that reflect on the identity of photography and the evolution of its meaning over the course of history. The artists invited to participate in the programme are Elina Brotherus, Clare Strand, Laura Letinsky, Sharon Core, Patrick Pound and Délio Jasse. ‘In all of the presented works, you can sense a fundamental change in the way photography functions, from the original concept through to its public display in this day and age. The programme’s contemporary works explore this metamorphosis and deal with the function, identity and role of the medium itself. In the selection there is a return to the historical relationship that photography has with painting, and a shift in the way that certain photographs were once considered but are now cast anew. Each artist grapples with photography to question its limits, its function, its expectations, its history and its legacy’, states Bright.
Fernán Gómez. Centro Cultural de la Villa will host three of the individual exhibitions that comprise Déjà vu? Elina Brotherus will present Playground with work inspired by the Fluxus movement. The artist poses questions related to art, the role of history, authorship, repetition and performance in a project created between 2016 and 2018 that includes 60 photographs and 30 videos. Brotherus creates a series of performances serving as a set of pictures that interrelate with one another and are reflected in their own historical references. Clare Strand will present The Discrete Channel with Noise, a group of works that examine what happens when information is misleading, misunderstood or misinterpreted. In the case of Strand, this loss of information occurs when she applies the experiment to her own work, whereby a medium—in this case, photography—is transformed into another one: painting. The result is a poignant manifestation of collaboration and communication with faults, fortitude and misunderstandings evident from the paint marks on paper. Furthermore, in O outro capítulo the Angolan photographer Délio Jasse reconstructs the socio-political history of the Portuguese colonies through the lost photographs and archives of two families. His work is a reflection on domestic spaces and everyday acts and the paradoxes in which they are enshrouded in certain contexts. Jasse presents the series Lost Chapter Nampula-1963 and Nova Lisboa based on a collection of slides that, together with other personal objects, were in a drawer that the artist found at a market in Lisbon. Jasse checked official documents, examined several photographic studies and printed out the photographs in order to investigate and discover the identity and whereabouts of the families.
At the Museo del Romanticismo, Sharon Core and Laura Letinsky establish a dialogue through which both artists draw on traditional representations of still lifes. The work of both Core and Letinsky is a sophisticated survey of the photographic medium and the still life genre. Both recreate their images on photographic plates, which question history and our image-dominated culture. Core revisits well-known paintings (in this case of flowers and fruit) and carefully replicates them. Working with a very different method, Letinsky incorporates cuttings from advertising and art and fashion magazines into her pictures. To these montages she then adds objects and reproductions, dissolving all sense of hierarchy. Together the two artists present a completely contemporary vision of the genre by creating works that explore the reproduction and distribution of images.
At the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Patrick Pound will reflect on the meaning behind collecting things. He explores personal archives, amassed over years of obsessive and meticulous searching, which include found photographs, everyday objects and newspaper and magazine cuttings. As if the world were one big jigsaw puzzle, Pound reorders these fragments through juxtapositions to create a broader, albeit imagined, logic. By doing so, banal and detached moments in time are elevated to become reflections on the human condition.
Great masters of international photography, collections and various generations of Spanish photographers in the Official Section
Coinciding with his 90th birthday, William Klein comes to Espacio Fundación Telefónica with Manifesto, the photographer’s first great retrospective in Spain. The exhibition will examine his photography as well as his painting, graphic work and cinematographic pieces to render a comprehensive portrait of the artist. Always in amongst the action, close to his subject to really capture the skin’s tension lines, Klein created some of his most important street photography in cities such as New York, Rome, Moscow and Tokyo during the fifties. ‘There is a celebration going on, without a doubt, in each and every one of these photographs. Celebration, affirmation, discovery, confirmation, revelation: these are all things that happen every time I press the shutter button. If all goes well, in no time at all I have millions of surprises to celebrate’, says the artist.
At the Círculo de Bellas Artes Donna Ferrato gathers together the testimonies of survivors of domestic violence in the United States. Holy is forged from the wrath of women towards a world in which they are hated. Ferrato’s photographs show that women are capable of surviving, but beyond merely surviving, Holy depicts the women who prevail. The viewer is invited to understand how it feels to be scorned by the patriarchy against which they fight and how they manage to maintain a sense of desire and courage. Ferrato’s images reveal the female body in all its monstrous glory, including her own.
At the same venue, the Sala Picasso room will host the exhibition Avant-Garde and Propaganda. Soviet books and magazines in the Archivo Lafuente 1913–1941, which continues on from last year’s show on Russian avant-garde photography. This time round a selection of publications—photobooks and magazines, together with other related documents—are presented, exploring the great dawn of typography, photomontage and photobooks in the Soviet Union between 1913 and 1941. All the material belongs to the Lafuente Archive, whose Russian Avant-Garde and Soviet Realism collection holds over 1,300 pieces. Through Fundación ENAIRE comes Fly! 100 Years in the Sky, an exhibition that covers 100 years of commercial aviation in Spain through historical and up-to-date images, which bear witness to the revolution that its development represented in the history of Spain.
Fundación Mapfre will once again participate in the PHotoESPAÑA programme with a monographic exhibition of the American photographer Berenice Abbott, one of the photographers who most effectively portrayed the transformation of New York City in the mid-twentieth century. Successor to the documentary tradition of Eugène Atget, who she herself helped to discover, Abbott took portraits of countless figures from the intellectual scene during her time in Paris. In just a few years she earned an important place among European portrait artists and bridged the gap between the European avant-garde and the burgeoning art scene on the east coast of the United States.
Casa de América will host the work of Joel Meyerowitz. Towards the Light brings together a selection of images taken during his stint in Spain in the late seventies. 98 photographs from the collection of Fundació Per Amor a l’Art, almost all of them taken between 1966 and 1967 in Malaga, where he lived together with the Escalonas, one of the most prominent flamenco families in the city. The same venue will host two other exhibitions: in Over the Rainbow, Diana Markosian, the recipient of the Elliott Erwitt Havana Club 7 Fellowship 2018, combines photography and video with documentary images to create a multi-layered portrait of a Cuban girl’s transition into womanhood. The Cuban photographer will also be the protagonist of The Image Without Limits, an anthological exhibition that covers almost two centuries of photographic history on the island, by means of 50 of its most prominent artists.
Casa Árabe will host the exhibition The Moroccans, by Leila Alaoui, which will present a series of 30 portraits that trace the photographer’s journey, in her portable studio, through her native country.
The Real Jardín Botánico, one of the festival’s most emblematic venues, will host several shows. These will include the exhibition of the Fundación ENAIRE Photography Award 2019, composed of ten works selected by the jury (including the PHE Honourable Mention), as well as a representative selection of the work of this year’s winner of the II Fundación ENAIRE Trajectory Award, and the artist Verónica Vicente, awarded the I Fundación ENAIRE Young Photographer Award 2019. Javier Vallhonrat will present his final project The Incised Shadow, a new survey of the relationship between man and nature. The show is the result of over 10 years of fieldwork conducted by the artist at the Maladeta Glacier in the Pyrenees. During this time he explored and lived alongside the glacier, which is currently in a fragile state of conservation. The visual artist Kimsooja will also present Earth-Water-Fire-Air, an installation inspired by the landscape of Lanzarote. The Korean artist explores the four elements, which, used by diverse philosophers since ancient times, designate the matter that constitutes material reality, according to both western and eastern traditions: earth, water, fire and air are a source of energy and life. Endlessly linked to great symbolic power, these four elements have had a profound influence on European culture and thought. Finally, the Real Jardín Botánico will present the exhibition ENDEAVOUR. The Eucalyptus, a Case Study, by Clément Verger, in which the French photographer provides a visual account of man’s ability to shape the environment based on personal gain.
The Museo ICO will host Landscape Framed. European Photography Commissions, 1984–2019, which presents, for the first time ever in Spain, a collection of long-term photography commissions documenting the changes suffered by rural, suburban and urban landscapes in Europe from 1984 through to the present day.
Tabacalera will host Normandie: Les rivages du débarquement, by Eduardo Nave. Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings, the photographer has returned to the historic D-Day sites—peaceful beaches where people swim and where remains of the artificial ports that were built can still be found—to restore their memory and raise our awareness of the misery that can occur when the forces of irrationality are unleashed.
The Sala Canal de Isabel II will host the first retrospective exhibition of the Seville-born artist David Jiménez, spanning over 25 years of personal work. In the show viewers will be able to examine his work and the evolution of his creative processes, which have given rise to photobooks, exhibitions and audiovisuals. Additionally, Sala Alcalá 31 will pay homage to Darío Villalba in Pop Soul. Encapsulated & Others, a monographic exhibition that, for the first time, brings together almost all of the artist’s most iconic works, the ‘encapsulated’.
The Museo Reina Sofía will participate in the festival with the exhibition Keep Reading, Giving Rise, by Rogelio López Cuenca. The show is the first compendium to survey the main concerns of the artist, who, since the eighties, has worked at the crossroads between poetry and the visual arts and mass media.
The Biblioteca Nacional de España will bring together The Best Photography Books of the Year with around 100 works selected following an open call for submissions by PHotoESPAÑA, in addition to the winning project and the 20 finalists of the Book Dummy Award, organised by La Fábrica and Photo London.
