Like a Renaissance man, Carlos Saura has crafted—seamlessly—all of his artistic endeavours on a single plane. His creative world encompasses disciplines that, while concentrating on cinema as the unifying force to tell stories constructed of images and sounds, he continues working on the rest of them separately, with total fruition and dedication.
He turned to the moving image from photography, from the analysis of forms with which this discipline came face-to-face with graphic modernity, searching for his own style and syntax, and since he began, he has stood out as among the very best. With regard to his first passion, photography, Carlos Saura has constructed an eclectic universe in which there is room for all of his experiences, from recounting the poverty and cold of an autarchic Spain, to his more recent passion for colour photographs he then manipulates by hand, the images he builds upon to create scripts, essays and aesthetic analyses of his filmography, to everything that has populated his affections, his most intimate life, his family.
